Today we have guest designer, Natalie Ormond, sharing with us a project she created using the Slice. Natalie is a talented crafter and has previously worked as a designer for Making Memories. Now she primarily freelances. We are so excited to have her share her skills!
Hi everyone! This is Natalie. I wanted to show you how to make something that would make an excellent gift or keepsake for your family. I have a one year old boy and these are a little too big for him, but would be perfect gift for my in-law's new baby!
Learn how to make these booties after the jump!
First thing you'll want to do is print out this sheet. Then, cut two of each of these out. I used felt but you could probably use flannel or fleece.
The next thing you should do, and I forgot to take a picture of this, is cut out your image with the Slice. I used the Triceratops from the Sweet Dreams card and cut him out at 2" in the regular way and the mirrored way. I just love the Sweet Dreams card, it is so versatile and has any image you'd want in a dream nursery. I used felt to cut the dinos out. First I iron the felt onto the fusible web. There is a trick to using felt though, you need to use the premium felt and not the cheapo kind. The Slice has a hard time cutting through the cheapo kind. I also like to cut the image, not move the machine - at all - and then select and cut the same image again so it cuts the same image twice.
The below picture shows what the booties look like when cut out.
Next, after you've iron on your image, stitch the heel of your bootie, but only up to the fold line.
When you stitch, only use a .25" hem.
When you're done, they'll look a bit like this. Turn them inside out.
After you've stitched the heel and turned it inside out, fold over the top of the bootie at the fold line and punch out the holes. I used my old Making Memories hole punch. I don't know what other tools there are out there for punching holes in fabric, but this one works great!
Pin the sole of the bootie to the shoe and stitch around the base.
Run your lace through the holes and there you have it! Remember, it's easier if you iron on the shape BEFORE you stitch the whole shoe. Don't make the same mistakes I made!
Aren't they adorable?
Hello Nataly
