Are you guys ready for some cuteness overload? Jenn, one of our project coordinators whipped together this adorable halloween cape for your pooch (or kitty, depending on how tolerant your kitty is of adornment). Get the downlow on how to make a cape for your best four-legged friend after the jump.
The
first thing that you should do is measure your dog from the back of its
neck to the base of its tail. This measurement can be used to sketch
out the length of your cape. I used a leftover scrap from my last Slice
project for the International Quilt
show in Houston. I sketched
out my cape outline keeping in mind my dog's measurements. Be sure to
use a pencil or washable fabric pen when free sketching any outline, it
is always great to have the ability to remove
any mistakes. Next,
I cut out my outline and laid what will be the bottom fabric of my cape onto the second piece of fabric and traced the outline of the other panel.
After cutting both outlines you should have a top and bottom for your
cape.
Using
the Mystery Hollow and Applique Basics card I cut out my skull and
crossbone design and used our new product Invisicut to also cut out a
few delicate lace flowers without the need for any fusible webbing. For added stiffness I applied a fabric stiffener to the top panel
of the cape as well as the lace flowers. To add a little body to the
flowers I curled the ends of the petals with a pencil while the
stiffener is still drying.
Begin
to form your appliqué on the top panel paying extra attention to not
iron down your appliqué as some fabric stiffeners are flammable.
Instead, hand stitch your pattern onto your top panel taking extra
attention to tack down any loose corners.
Next,
lay your bottom panel right side down on top of your appliquéd panel and
pin your cape along the edge and sew completely around the cape leaving
the top open. I then fold the cape right side out, push out my seem and
then fold the open edges of the
cape inwards and sew my string onto the top. For added cuteness I added a
few buttons to the collar.
Then, voila! We have a cute Halloween puppy cape! Here comes the hard part…
trying to get said cape onto your puppy! And, in my case try to take
a decent photo of the caped crusader! Happy Slicing all!
